Is it true that, to become famous, you first need to be a backup singer in a band, or be a church choir member before you can have a chance of becoming well known as a solo artist? If so, why?

This is a good question. I don't blame you for thinking that, because there are a few famous people you can think of that first did backing duties before they became well-known. Names like John Legend, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and Mary J Blige usually comes to mind when you think about that. But to answer your question, I think it is more about who you know in the Industry, what connections you have with which ceo's of which established record labels, etc. It's all about networking that might get you that fame spot.
